So the ego is entirely made up for society. The second thing which ego does is to look at the (perceived) status you have in society. Shame completely inhibits your right brain hemisphere, where conscious intent comes from, which means you become a slave to your perceptions of other peoples judgements.
Low status, lots of shame, means lots of inhibition.
A few thousand years ago competence lead to status, as you could give orders to other people, they would do it, it would work, it would decrease their decision making stress, and increase your status as you are the most competent person in the tribe. People want to listen to you as it is in their own self interest.
Consciousness is not ego, consciousness is the ability to say what you think/believe in while the ego is absent, psychologically, not just on a rational level. So consciousness is pretty much a right brain function, and self control is also a right brain function. Being controlled by others is a left brain function, which means other people control you through your ego part which sits in the left brain and receives orders
