Only in middle school do they ever get to form words. Only in high school do they learn what is a sentence. Only honors students ever get to read a book or two.
Everyone would think the letters are useless. They serve no practical purpose other than very specialized ones like reading books.
And that's what's wrong with how math is taught everywhere.
