>>11766110Pharmaceutical companies have cut a substantial amount of funding to research into psychiatric drugs and so it is unlikely there is anything on the horizon in the near future, save for some serendipitous discovery in academia of a novel agent (which incidentally started psychopharmacology in the first place with the discovery of chlorpromazine (anti-psychotic)). Nowadays psychiatrists are looking back at old drugs including an increase in use of tricyclics and the use of ketamine or MDMA for its 5-HT2 agonist properties.
I doubt the future that many junkies want which is that everyone goes on trips every now and again to ward off depression and anxiety will come true. My hope is that psychiatry further grows into a subset of neurology, deep brain stimulation is becoming more and more advanced and in about 20 years we might see surgical treatment for major refractory depression and suicidality, if not psychosis, come to light.
