Has anyone on this board got any experience with doing scientific research without any publisher/qualifications?

I’ve done some independent research on superabsorbent polymers. The data and results were quite interesting, but I don’t intend to publish any of it. Independent research is a lot more fun, you feel like a trailblazer rather than a lab monkey. The obvious downside is that you need to purchase all your own equipment, but you can assemble a decent lab for pretty much anything except high-energy physics for just a few grand. If you’re willing to wait for deals to show up you can really drive the cost down. Some places actually make owning stuff like lab glassware illegal, so be sure to know your local regulations before you pursue anything.

They function via hydrogen bonding. It’s the same merchanism that makes sponges hydrophilic, but to a much more extreme degree.
