It's not about rapists or murderers, it's about a given woman's perception. It's just that they tend to romanticise rapists and murderers in a certain section of the present culture. If they took them plainly as rapists and murderers their perception would not lead to attraction. Women are very fickle and extremely sensitive to your wording and others' attention/attraction, which leads them to a perception.
As for why the violent men = hot exists, women are also extreme social conformists and don't much think for themselves. It's very easy for silly things like that to propagate. Women reinforce it in women.
