The chemists are the ones designing the product we're actually selling but the CTO is an engineer and so much focus gets put on the engineers then they wonder why the product ends up not working when the chemists were ignored when we said that their objectives are not properly defined and the chemistries developed won't achieve what they want without better design inputs.

I think you explained in your own post why the focus is on engineering. Engineers are supposed to be the professionals involved in all the technical aspects. A better engineering team would've given you better parameters and taken reponsibility for when your project failed.

In general scientists should be limited in the roles they take which are appropriate to their skillset. Engineers should keep the production potential and overall life cycle in mind.

Of course it is, if it went to other, more talented companies that cost would likely be even less.

I am not complaining at all, because Tesla/SpaceX presents a big pay day for startups on the scene. The problem is he also buys up a lot of scam/useless tech.

This power should be in the hands of a skilled committee. I think all of you will understand when you become researchers yourself. There is limited enough money being handed out as it is, it would be better for more competant people like academics to hand it out such as the NSF. Again though they have far money than anyone, I don't think the system is broken. I'm just not a fanboy of the Musk.

He's a workaholic and comfortable with being as much. A great amount of the upper crust of humanity have that kind of infinite patience for high intensity work. Not a fan of people jacking off of a man as being almost superhuman for that trait but you have to unerstand that this guy is going after this stuff at any cost come hell or high water.

That is partly why America hasn't ever truly developed anything original in the last century, the last 75 years has mostly been about improving tech looted from Germany (including electronic computers (Konrad Zuse), rockets (Werner von Braun) and battery powered motors (elektroboot).

It's why in the battery domain many companies already lost its attention on nanotech ideas from 10 years ago that are now finally spawning a lot of good European companies. This time Tesla won't be able to just buy them either. America wouldn't have fallen behind if we had gotten more grants in this field, but it virtually dried up in 2012.

If you read some of the interview stories from former/current SpaceX employees and former/current NASA employees, they paint a picture of SpaceX being very similar style of progress as the NASA of the 60s/70s when things were at their best. Elon's companies are all operating at unconventional pace.

There's a good chunk of interview from Dan Rasky(NASA) on Elon/SpaceX's way of thinking/doing that's completely unconventional/fast.

This wasn't my point, my point was America falling behind on the INVESTMENT. Do you understand that when these foreign companies invest in our companies then we lose stake in our own companies? Rather than getting more development grants from the US we have to sell it to Europe and the Chinese, the latter of which outright steals our IP as soon as possible.

Most of your post is in support of mine. It is exactly what I mean. Taxpayers paid for our universities and research grants, but now the fruits of that labour is being taken by other countries.

I work with a very international research group and I think the Westerner's all have this fantasy of living in a mixed, multicultutal society that is entirely disconnected from reality.

The only true example of a multicultural nation is Brazil. Western nations aren't mixed, the ethnic group are always the majority and less that 5% of that group mixes with other races. There is also a clear distinction between the cultures of different ethnic groups.

In 2007, 3 years after joining the company, Musk pushed out the original founders of the company and started a lawsuit. One of the end results of the lawsuit was that Musk was able to change his job title at Tesla to "Founder".

Not really, I work for one of the major defense companies and I've seen my boss throw out CVs with SpaceX on it. It might have started out as light banter, but it actually ended up having serious consequences for someone's career.
