why are things like the quadratic formula needed.

seems strange that someone would need to come up with a formula for solving certain equations.

shouldn't you always be able to arrive at an answer by just doing the same thing on both sides?

the fact that i need to memorize a specific formula if i want to solve certain problems doesn't sit right with me. i feel like i should always be able to arrive at an answer if i just move numbers around.
