I wouldn't go as far as saying that individuals don't make any inventions, but it's very, very unlikely. "Don't count on it" unlikely. Even the transistor and the iPhone were invented respectively at the Bell Laboratories and by Apple, not independent individuals. I also don't know what you mean by "online company", exactly, but I might be the retard here. Do you mean something like a digital startup? I'm pretty sure these aren't patented.
