I didn't take any econ courses tho so I guess I should read a textbook. Will that be a problem? I did really well in my math/cs course so I can take on whatever math the econ students do.

It's probably allowed, the difficult part is getting a prof to take you as a PhD student when you have no experience in the subject. Expect a lot of rejections or low-hanging fruits

TBQH I'm making bank on stock trading so I figured its a career I can pursue. A PHD in econ could be a good path for me to really understand how economics works. I'll take the gmat and apply i guess. I've been NEET'ing for three years since graduating with honors.

math is a great undergrad for econ. CS could be good too if it is less engineering focused and more theoretical like at MiT/carngie Mellon and other top schools.

usually top econ students will major in econ but take a lot of math classes, sometimes even graduate measure theory.
you should absolutely take economics classes but focus on the core. 4-5 should be fine.

what econ stuff do you want to study?

why not do a master's in finance? if you are into stocks?
finance, like mba will take all kinds of backgrounds.
the way you are talking it doesn't sound like you really understand what Phds are about. you have to have a specific research question you want to understand. if you haven't even read books how do you know what that is?

I'm reading mankiw's book and I read a book about the history of finance. I guess the problems of figuring out a way to value stocks is interesting. The whole behavioral economics and rational choice model clash is interesting too.

Maybe you'll have to take some classes depending on what your pHD is going to be on, but since you did math in undergrad it won't be too hard for you as you already have all the critical thinking skills you'll need.

yeah not an MBA. specifically finance, which is much more technical and quantatively focused.
that Berkely one ooks good. I know someone who went to utah has a good one too. maybe use that as another comparison.

also look at finance PhDs and see what they typically do first year of courses. find a program that does that.
