At least not in my (30yo boomer) life time, will we?
Not only will we have to just cope with gradually decaying bodies, we have to be extra careful not to end up paralyzed, lose limbs, or otherwise become disabled.
I can't get excited about smartphones, rockets, or other meme tech.
Really, this is the tech we need the most, but seem to have the least progress on.

False. It's already available but research was cut due to ethical concerns

It went like this
>project presents the idea of taking stem cells from a patient who need new organs

The plan was expected to cost just 1/3 of standard donated organs but they cut it at the stage of modifying pig fetus because someone had the bright idea to ask:
"What if it grew a human brain? Is it still a pig?"
"What if it had 50% human organs? Is it still a pig?"

The concerns were valid but it really makes you wonder how far we can progress if not for ethics and morals.

We were so close
So close to having orcs rampaging our cities.

We have pretty good prosthetics already. We can 3d print parts of organs and iirc we can grow parts of the liver in a dish. Skin from your ass can be used to reconstruct your face too, which would be a real improvement in your case.

So quit pretending like losing a leg is a death sentence or something.

30yo here too. I think our generation will actually grow to be several decades older than the current generation of old people. I can see us solving certain common causes of death. Obesity, maybe even cancer. We'll be able to grow certain organs that fail too most likely.

But I don't think they'll be able to extend our brains too far past 100 years old. I could see the best solution being one that basically replaces parts of your brain, and you'll lose memories, personality. Society will probably come to accept that as cheating death, but eventually you're brain would be the Ship of Theseus.

Med anon here, the problem with your pic is the fact that organogenesis requires accurate engineering of the vasculature within an organ, which can be very arbitrary depending on the person’s metabolism, age, substance abuse issues, body requirements etc.

Typically the organs we have, have been with us since the beginning so they grow with us, they develop new blood vessels and some areas have higher density of vasculature than others etc.. that is difficult to engineer in a stem cell, even then stem cell organs aren’t as reliable as original ones.

It means either two things: 1. We don’t have the tech yet to understand how organs form naturally in the womb and how/why are they superior in quality to the ones grown in labs

2. We just don’t know enough about genetic engineering and restructuring to figure out the minutes of building these complex things

Not to mention that the body typically attacks anything foreign it sees. Sometimes even autografts get attacked

Why would our immune system attack cells with our own DNA (and then ignore cancer lazy motherfucker).

because cancer cells manage to trick the cancer proof mechanism (tumor suppressor genes) or somehow activate oncogenes ( genes that promote unregulated cell growth).. typically tumor suppressors are supposed to keep an eye on oncogenes and ensure they don’t accidentally start a cancer cell line but sometimes in some people these fail-safe mechanisms fail, either due to age, substance abuse (smoking, alcoholism, repeated damage, UV damage, chemical damage etc etc) and it starts changing the cell type in that area to cope better with the damage. Then more damage occurs and the cells start dividing in a stupid and erratic way.. eventually causing cancer..

Even then some cancerous cells are benign and don’t go beyond their boundaries.. all you gotta do is cut it out.. some others cross the boundaries and eventually spread everywhere.. causing a malignant cancer (or cancer as we know it)

That’s why curing cancer is an absurd term.. different things in different body parts cause cancer.. you are unlikely to get skin cancer by smoking just like you are unlikely to get lung cancer by sitting in the skin without sun screen
