This is a true gotcha. It's illogical to infer that a segment of the blackbody radiation curve actually dips below zero, under ANY circumstances.

Any mathematical expression of a filter key algorithm for noise reduction must not be randomly applied across all regions. It must be applied to all regions equally to be a valid noise reduction method. Also any noise reduction methods applied will reduce the dynamic range of what is represented in the results.

What was the authors explanation for why they thought they could just produce some fitted curves and multiply the different intensities of the different bands to get the anisotropy map? Did they think that as long as the coefficients equaled unity it would be fine? Why would unity be any different than any other number? What would the difference be if there were only 4 bands sampled?

I see exactly what they're trying to do. It's somewhat similar to standard techniques in coherent signal processing, where we can actually cancel very large signals revealing small ones. To do this, you can have negative weights, and even complex (real + imaginary) weights, regardless of temperatures, because it is just waves, phases, and amplitudes.

What they're attempting to do here, however, is invalid. Because they have no basis for coherent reference-based cancellation, and especially no basis for blind cancellation or adaptive clutter cancellation. The data is incoherent and undersampled both spatially and temporally (that is, not sampled at least 2X times the largest frequency component), so there is no way to unambiguously do what they are attempting to do.

For people who are not versed in cancellation or adaptive beam forming, you should just consider that it's extremely difficult to see very significant, closer emitters that are occluded by the sources and dust of the Milky Way. So, the claim that we can clearly see minute fluctuations at the edge of the observable universe through this stuff, and all the trillions of other galaxies we have recently learned are along the path, should raise an eyebrow.
