1) engineers are not trained in critical thinking and self-doubt in the same way scientists are, their education and culture emphasize optimism and the possibility to "just make it work"
2) engineers do not have access to the academic apparatus and expert peer review that polish the rough edges of shitty research. they have no experience in publishing and stand to lose less (their career doesn't depend on it)
3) expertise in one area doesn't equate to competence in another. happens to scientists and mathematicians too.
