Are there any scientists/mathematicians who didn't go to ivy league or top tier universities and weren't child prodigies? I am talking about individuals who made valuable contributions to their respective fields, not literally whos.

Is it an American thing to need to see one's self being celebrated and advertised to others before they feel valuable or important?

Pretty sure Feynman didn't give a shit about his nobel prize and said the reward was that people could utilize his work and findings constructively.

Seems strange to try and measure what impact one would have prior to making a choice. Sort of like keeping a cyclic redundancy check going just because one had brain cycles to spare.

Or is it an innate thing that iff underdog then new story? Pretty sure that being monopolized by genius is more a result or trait of marketing and advertising more than their genius being obvious upon inspection.

motivation for what? That through effort they'll somehow be accepted and integrated into some other group's smoothing function? If they originated from somewhere they couldn't be taught or shown how to be happy, inclusive and welcomed then why would they get that truth somewhere else?

yeah I mean this wasn't suppose to be a super deep post. I was just looking for role models to look up to who wasn't a boy genius (like me) but made great contributions to science (acknowledged or not). I guess you could say I have some confidence issues with myself and want to see success from someone who was more human than genius so that I feel reassured that I too could potentially be useful for the world of science.

I am just curious if it is a motivation or confidence thing. Motivation means feeling like you personally can achieve a known thing, confidence is feeling like you know what it is you want to do.

Put them together and boom.

If it is a case of role models, or lack thereof, then the very least you can start with is not wanting or needing to feel guilty for continuing your current path.

If you scroll through the list of Fields medalists, a pretty decent chunk of the European ones come from unremarkable schools.
Places like the University of Geneva or the University of Pisa or all the other random euro schools are not at in any way _bad_, but I wouldn't call them top tier either. They're not comparable to Princeton or MIT.

They're still the top schools of their respective countries. Meaning those Yuros recipients were the cream of the crop in their nation. So the talent were there. And the fact that they overachieved with mediocre school says a lot about their effort and the validity of university rankings

Top tier universities are an American concept that bourgs created so their offspring could feed off of the accomplishments of others. So just look at every German scientist/mathematician who wasn't a child prodigy. One example off of the top of my head is Gregor Mendel.
