When an Empire falls, all that remain is the inventions it bore forth, much of human knowledge today bear homage to the day of the ancient Greeks and Babylonians, and when it comes to space travel, that might serve as a crucial part to preserving humanity as a species if and when the day comes when this earth can no longer sustain life.
Think of it like putting money in your retirement fund, it might feel like a waste now but you'll be goddamn happy you did the day you can no longer work. (US people might not be able to relate since you live in a 3rd world country without proper societal infrastructure)
