You definitely make yourself smarter by studying, but really you have had the intelligence to do so for a long time, but only just applying yourself.
There are people just are just quicker at getting there than you, though. But most of us fall within the 110-130 range which is plenty for learning almost anything.
the difference between 110 and 120 is very negligible, particularly when you take into account areas of intelligence that are stronger or weaker between two individuals.
It's rare to encounter someone outside of this range that has the personality and intelligence where it counts. There's a lot of people greater than 130, that stop trying because everything is too easy but there's no way to get around doing the easy still to get to the hard stuff. Most tests or exams are specifically designed so that you have to study the content, and IQ is only going to help you if you spend some time at reading the content (as you will learn it faster). I know that a lot of arrogant big iq people don't even bother or wait until the last minute and get only fraction or their potential.
If anything learning more things helps you see more patterns between different areas, particularly if it's mathematics, physics, computer science, etc.
