Software engineering is abstract. It's all shit. Managers don't understand it. Non-technical staff don't understand it. You can't look at a software program like you can look at a bridge and say "yes that's good" "no that's bad and unsafe look its falling apart and killing people"
The industry rewards people who work fast without knowing what they're doing and write legacy code from day one, cos they write fast and impress non-technical upper management
Every software program is a steaming pile of shit and if it isn't yet it will be when the company adds another developer to do the work with you.
It's easier to write new shit than read and understand what's already there so that's what they do
I studied physics. If I'd studied Engineering instead I'd have learnt the same shit, less maths, more CAD and boring industry tools. And have an engineering job with like 4x the salary I have now
