The FDA only approved it for "compassionate use". Essentially for people who were already going to die.
Something that's not really talked about is that by the time you're on ventilator support, the viral load has already gone down significantly. So there's no point in taking anti-viral medication. It's the cytokine storm (your immune system causing damage to the body) that gets you.
HCQ and any other anti-viral medication has to be prescribed early on to lower the viral load, or it's completely useless. This also goes for another anti-viral like Remdesivir, it's useless when it's prescribed late. The media however has promoted remdesivir because the drug companies can charge $1000/dose per patient. We're talking tens of billions of dollars in profit for the drug companies if the FDA approves ONLY Remdesivir.
