>>11728471I think you underestimate the impact of showing how beautiful maths can be to normies. You see, in most non-totally-bullshit university programmes you have to take something resembling Calculus I, II, Linalg, ODE’s and some Probability theory at least. If not trying hard, your average middlebrain won’t get even Calc I right, not to mention the others, which leads to a lot of students just slacking trough their maths courses with minimal effort, and then being surprised later that they struggle with their other classes building on mathematics.
However, when motivated right, your average enginnering/economics/whatever slightly maths related student will be able to understand the topics in their education. Showing the beauty maths through intuitive, graphical approaches to problems undeniably done well by Grant, which can be a great motivator. To go back to your basketball metaphor, I think that his channel is not only attracting obese audience to great basketball games, (which it really does, not denying that) but also encourages people to go to their neighbourhood basketball court and try the game themselves.
Sorry for defending reddit söiböys, but they got this one right: “communicating” maths to the masses is important. Your elitist bullshit only applies to the handful of people who can do better than that.
