What are some essential books if I want to get some base level general knowledge of physics?
Like I want to get to a level where I can read papers and reliably understand the general idea presented
Is ''Young and Freedman - University Physics with Modern Physics'' from the sticky a good place to start?
I have no formal education in physics and I only have the shitty math knowledge they teach in high schools in my country (Turkey) but I'm willing to work hard to learn

It's pretty good. But if you have a shitty math background maybe going through Stewart's Calculus is not a bad idea.
You'll have a greater understanding of mechanics principles such as Work and Acceleration if you know the principles and applications of derivatives and integrals. :-)

I'm in a PhD doing AMO experiment and it's difficult for me to read papers on nuclear physics, for example. or condensed matter.

don't be discouraged by how hard it is. I would recommend what you mentioned, but focus on the modern stuff. focus on understanding QM primarily.

Just focus on the basics, you'll take some time to learn it all, then you can focus on understanding harder things like QM. Walk before running.

I meant that, in your progress, understanding QM is the most important in understanding modern papers. you won't get far without it. in fact, you won't get anywhere just by knowing classical mechanics and E&M.
it seems you missed the entire point of what I was saying. knowing the "basics" is not enough to read modern physics papers. and that's okay, I was assuring the OP that it's hard even for us in the field. the papers are just fucking hard now. if you want to have any chance at all you need to understand QM. not saying start with this, but at least make sure this is a big part of it.
