It's a common trope in sci-fi that almost species often discover their mathematics in different orders than we do such as calculus being formalized before algebra and such.
Is this actually possible or is the progression of math too iterative and linear to allow for something like that?
Is there any advanced forms of mathematics that could have been easily discovered far, far earlier through chance or differences in thinking?
