Lots of great chemistry books out there but even if you read them all you’d still be a worse chemist than an undergrad who spent a summer doing clumsy experiments

as said before me: get your ass in a lab with some roundbottoms, columns, and heating mantels. and so, until that happens, read this--synthesis and techniques in inorganic chemistry.
i wish every damn day my lab partners would have picked up a fucking book, this one in particular. do not be fooled, the techniques discussed are widely applicable, from setting up an inert atmosphere, to doing chemistry below -100°C.

These cover the foundations for most undergraduate level chemistry courses.

Start with "Chemical Structure and Reactivity" by Keeler and Wothers (personal favourite.)

Or alternatively "Chemistry^3" by Burrows, Holman, Parsons, Pilling and Price.

For organic, read "Organic Chemistry" by Clayden, Greeves and Warren.

For physical read, "Physical Chemistry" by Atkins and de Paula.

For inorganic, read "Inorganic Chemistry" by Weller, Overton, Rourke and Armstrong.

I always told everyone who wanted to learn chemistry: study the intermediate structures of any synthesis. if the intermediate structures aren't shown, work them out. if you can do this, and you can get a few years of in-person lab experience (technique has a LOT to do with a good quality synthesis) then you can get a job in a lab and actually move your way upward. inevitably, though, you will hit a wall where you need a degree. if you're good enough and you work for someplace that runs on actual money then they may very well pay for (or part of) your education. then >acquire paper certificate and you're done

This is probably the wrong thread, but I have a question that is really pressing and probably doesn't deserve it's own thread.

DEF is just a urea compound. What is stopping someone from using it to manufacture ammonia nitrate or another ammonia product? It is even less regulated than fertilizer or anhydrous ammonia.

In the past I've gone through exams and checked my answers on that site if I had extra time. I wouldn't change my answers if I were wrong, but I'd tidy up my correct answers if I missed something such as forgetting a curved arrow for electron movement, or forgetting to put in a formal charge. That's not cheating.
