Basically, by using this carefully ligated iridium catalyst, you can take garbage tier unreactive compounds like THF, alkanes etc... and regioselectively borylate them.

which is good because now you can do all sorts of fucking chemistry with it.

With methods like this becoming even quicker/more accurate it could be really important for companies which don't want to pay extortionate prices for their precursors.

Closely related research also looks into improving methane conversion which is a really exciting from an environmental perspective.

This is in itself just a development for “niche chemical manufacturing” because it uses goddamn iridium. Ir catalysts have been used to do all kinds of miraculous shit but at the end of the day it’s not practical unless we have wildly underestimated the abundance of Ir on earth

Big ups to Hartwig because he’s a nice guy and the result is cool, but this particular discovery probably doesn’t really have a disruptive impact

If something is able to functionalize a C-H bond it will react with EVERY other functional group on the molecule making a mess. Either you have pure alkanes without double bonds or it will make a shitton of impurities.
