Can you kill viruses, or only deactivate them?

/news/ is having a shitfest over whether you can kill or only deactivate viruses, and even claiming that you can't reactivate viruses.

We re-activated a number of ancient viruses in the 2010s alone. Hell, formerly eradicated viruses were re-activated because of the antivax movement.

No, because viruses aren't alive. "Kill" is a common misconception used to describe subduing a virus to where it no longer poses a threat. You can only disable a virus, or find ways to make them ineffective (such as vaccines that increases your immunity towards them).

think of a virus like a plastic key and the cell as lock. Under regular condition the key fits the lock and then enters the cell.
now subject the key to a heat gun or put in a hot oven so it melts a bit. The key's teeth stops aligning with the lock and no longer has access to the cell and becomes useless

One reason we say viruses "aren't alive" is they don't have a metabolism. There's no homeostasis going on in them, they're just tiny dna/rna bombs. You can disarm and rearm a bomb as long as it's mostly intact.

Not literally, no.
