graphene and other 2D materials are mostly for fundamental science research at this point. From 2004 (not 2002) there has been an enormous amount of discoveries related to graphene that advance our understanding of fundamental physics and material science. Will it ever be applicable? Probably not soon, but that doesn't stop humanity from investing in, say, space exploration and LHC

A material is only a strong as its weakest point. The magical "strength" of carbon nano-tubes etc that is touted is literally just the strength of a carbon-carbon bond.

I could claim diamonds are 1000x stronger than steel on the same basis, but in bulk reality most diamonds can withstand less tensile stress than pig iron.

It has some cool electrical and intercalation properties though

What I hate is like OP said we have heard about graphene for decades, yet calcium copper titanate suddenly creates dielectric values so high that the math says it does not make sense. No one ever hears of it.
