Since you're talking about prehistory OP, then I'm willing to bet that back then the strongest were also the smartest. Because intelligent people are more likely on average to find food and be well-fed. Which made them stronger than the malnourished idiots. It was the idiots who formed those institutions, because they could not compete. But they did outnumber the smart ones so most hopped on board with them.

Anyways, I can't find the study, but there have been a few done that compared mDNA diversity to DNA diversity and found that around the same time agriculture became prevalent was when monogamy started being the norm. Basically up until around 10000 years ago polygamy was the norm, which is not that long biologically speaking.
