My guess is this is a holdover from the days when you couldn't get an approximation for this number in two seconds with your smartphone, and actually had to crank this out with tables/slide rule. Could be wrong though.

Rationalizing sometimes helps with finding certain limits too, so it could also be some admin just decided to put it earlier in the curriculum.

back when they had to look up values for square roots in tables and multiply and divide decimals by hand, it was best to put them in the numerator because as another anon said, multiplication is easier than division. now we have calculators and computers so more and more you see 1/sqrt(2) instead of sqrt(2)/2 now.
