How fast can /sci/ do mental arithmetic? Genuinely curious.

How many seconds does it take for you to compute something simple like 762*2 or 38*3?

Four seconds here. Is there anyone who can "see" the answer instantly like we normals can with 2+2?

I have some serious aphantasia so I dont see shit but I usually break it down and add up the sums
like first I would do 700 * 2 + 62 * 2 because thats waaay easier than actually trying to multiply 762 by 2

I also thought about how I work out different numbers yesterday, for 14 * 7 I did :
14 * 3
double it
add 14
thinking about it now I should've just done (7*7) * 2

overall it only takes me 3-4 seconds depending on difficulty but I think your method has a big impact on it

Yeah, that is what I was talking about. I use that same method but just "calculating" would seem like way faster. Like 30*3 just pops into my head but add 5 then I need to break it down.

Also, I imagine it would seriously help when trying to calculate shit like 105*15 which is 1575. It just gets way harder with more steps and things to keep in memory. If I could cut 1050+500+25 to just 1050+525 shit would be way easier

I know some tricks that make multiplications very fast

e.g. 97*103 = 10000-9 = 9991

A couple seconds, I genuinely don't think it's possible to visualise instantly the answer like 2+2, because 2+2 isn't a calculation but a concept that's anchored in our psyche. You probably had to deal with 2+2 many times in your life with different objects, but probably not 762+762, just like you can instantly tell a picture contains 2 or 4 objects without counting, but not 762.
