What keeps an ionic lattice together?

If each pair of ions are already bonded, why does the entire lattice stick together if each pair(s) are already neutralized?

So if we picked a random spot on the lattice the ions would have a +ve or -ve charge? I don't really get that, I thought they shared an electron with an opposite ion then they were bonded together and happy.

It is energetically more favourable to exist as an infinite lattice than a single, highly electronegative compound. Bear in mind each point in the lattice does not just experience attraction to the nearest counterions, but to all counterions throughout the lattice.
This is energetically more favourable than just one strong interaction between two counterions.

And that's why chemistry is for degenerates.

Jk it's my highest mark in college this semester and I might have to go with it instead of a more "pure" field. (Or maybe I am a degenerate.)
