I'm an EE and had very few Mechanics classes and have never used what I learnt there in my job, and still I know the difference between the first and second law.
I wouldn't trust an engineer, and this a a mechanical engineering we are talking about, that couldn't tell me what F=ma means, whether he worked in academia or not.
