Co-worker today said that a bunch of diseases will be released when the icecaps melt. Never in my life have I heard that.

That's ridiculous. The only way that would make any sense whatsoever is if every square meter of land covered by icecaps had dozens of human corpses of people who died from said diseases, assuming the virus/bacteria that causes the diseases could survive being frozen for tens of thousands of years.

Oldest recovered DNA is only ~60k years old so not a big concern. It does decay even when frozen.

It is one of the possible outcomes yes. Not by any means guaranteed and it won't be some green smoke that just bursts out. What it just means is that diseases previously locked in animals, plants, soil or even humans buried in permafrost or ice can get loose again which can be dangerous to us and other modern organisms since these old diseases are different from the ones we see now (even if it was just the 10k year back version of the flu or some tree disease). It's essentially and evolutionary time skip and it's possible that the organisms have lost the particular resistance to those particular strains over time. Pretty unlikely it will effect humans but plants that live in tundra or boreal climates especially could be at risk.

We are not even immune to smallpox and it was around till about 50 years ago. It also has been with humans since before civilization, but it never made mankind extinct. Your fallacy is thinking that there are only two options: either the disease eradicates humanity, or we are immune to it. That is false and low IQ; smallpox is a counterexample.

Can someone explain to me what progressives intend to do with this knowledge? Unless China and India reach net zero carbon emissions, these fun facts are futile. It doesn’t matter how much virtue signaling you do by going to wind power (which is carbon positive to create). We do have greater immunity against smallpox now.

an interesting thing to look into is rinderpest aka cattle plague.
mongolian grey ox are the most tolerant to it, as they migrated out they spread the disease to local livestock causing famines it I understand it contributed to chingis' khan's exapansion
