Conservation of angular momentum is pretty counter intuitive i think, why would a system maintaining its direction of rotation be favored over not doing it?

Strange. Back when I worked on this we called it the Meissner effect or the Meissner Ochsenfeld effect.
Also other parts of his explanations were a bit dodgy.
