Is this normal? How much do you remember 2 months after a course? What about a year? How does one acquire knowledge and retain it?

You crammed, not studied. I crammed one of my physics courses and forgot everything. I didn't cram my math courses except for parts of semesters where I fell ill and though i don't feel comfortable all the time doing this problems I do always manage to do differential equations if I let my mind explore and warm up on the problem for a say if I haven't done it in a while.

What you remember and can retain is hugely dependent on the quality of your sleep.
Don't sleep properly or at the appropriate time after learning?; Don't remember shit.
If reading isn't your thing he was on Joe Rogan and was pretty comprehensive.

I wish US unis weren't turbo-jews that require you to take 100+ hours of useless topics along with 20 hours of what you actually want to study to squeeze the most money out of you. As if I needed 5 different writing courses, 4 literature courses, 4 history courses, 1 speech course, and a ton of other bullshit for a maths degree

Great book. Picked it up at an airport on a whim once and couldn’t put it down.

He’s a little over eloquent and he probably exaggerated at points, but that book motivated me to get my daily 8 hours of sleep and it’s made a big difference. For example, I almost never have a mid day lull in the afternoon anymore; I feel a little more efficient overall

Yeah I really didn't like his writing style either but the content itself is great. Very valuable information.
He was actually much more straight forward and practical in his language on JRE. It was a great episode.

this. we were all told that university would give us so much freedom and responsibility but that's just bullshit. it's no different from high school with the gay ass group projects and tons of uninteresting content for the sake of content. at least high school gave me time to study the things I wanted to study in depth.

Yes, because school is not about gaining knowledge and understanding. It is about memorizing things to spit out on a test. If you want to get a degree so you have a piece of paper to show an employer, go to school. If, on the other hand, you want to learn about and understand science and math, don't waste your time on school. Get some textbooks on libgen and study them. School is all about memorizing formulas (which in real life you can reference a formula sheet for, and you'll naturally memorize them without trying if they are so important that you use them enough), and not at all about learning and understanding what is actually going on.

best way to remember somehting is to just repeatedly do something. This is why high school course work tends to be a shit ton of excercises and repetition (partly because the excercises are significantly less time consuming than uni excercises too). Just keep doing math and using calculus and eventually it will become second nature. This is also why cramming is bad. If you take time throughout the year to work on material you will use the material more than once and remember it better than if you just cram everything at the end, apply it once on the test, and be done with it.

another good way to remember if you choose to go back and review calc is to try to derive all the theorems and formulas yourself. it takes much more mental effort to create something than to read something, so you will remember it better.

high school was and some early uni courses were, but most of my uni courses have given us formula sheets with every little formula so we didn't have to know how to do anything but solve problems given a formula sheet. of course, this doesn't mean it really taught us a real understanding. all my undergrad intro physics courses for example were basically learning to identify the relevant formula for a problem and then plugging and chugging.

imo the problem with school is it doesn't really teach creativity and how to solve new problems or how to explore anything yourself. you usually learn how to solve every type of problem that will appear on the exam, and then just regurgitate how you were taught to solve problems on the exam.

It's normal for midwits like you who need to study to pass. The people excelling in your classes to begin with probably didn't study and they're retaining everything just fine because it's just easy for them. There's like 8 definitions/theorems in linear algebra worth remembering depending on how it's taught. Even fewer in calculus. If you're struggling to remember them it's because your first instinct was to try to memorize them instead of simply solving problems using them.

Don’t even bother that much in memorizing something and being neurotic about how much you know about a subject that you are not actively applying in your real life everyday. It’s a waste of time and energy, sooner or later you will come to this conclusion

i don't know why i bother now though :( sometimes i don't think i'll ever get to use it.
