How important is the difference between editions when studying from a textbook outside of university?
Is a 15 years difference the appropriate time to invest into a newer edition or does it not matter that much? Im reffering to non-math introductory textbooks.

Studying calculus with the seventh edition instead of the ninth was a slight nuisance. Pedagogically, things that took me a lot of time would go a lot faster due to improved visuals, for example the seventh had a grey box system for functions with inputs and outputs for multiple chain rule, whereas the ninth used colours and other means to clarify quickly, and allow faster intuition. With better pedagogical comunication, the focus becomes the problem rather than interpretation of the communication of the problem.

Other textbooks were just less relevant, and would provide more motivation if the context they were discussing was just more present to the times. For example outdated computer systems, languages and industry practices are not interesting.

Currently holding the 7th ed, it wasnt black and white, it is teal and blue etc for design purposes, but the newer used green and pink etc in conceptual places that previously were boring and convoluted to make parts contrast against eachother, to pop out. To emphasise what needed to be understood. Slight other changes too beyond color

for introductory level textbooks, the basic information isn't going to change much. the differences will mostly be in how the information is described and organized, and the quality of the illustrations. for graduate/professional level texts, most of the changes from edition to edition will be about adding new information, not about changing existing information.

for example, if you're looking at Albert's Molecular Biology of the Cell, that's the type of textbook that graduate students/postdocs/faculty will have on their shelf and pull down occasionally. i know people who still use the 2002 4th edition, I have the 5th edition from 2007, and there was a 6th edition in 2014. People will go ages between upgrading their edition because the changes from edition to edition are minor, and the full book is FUCKING expensive. the 6th edition mostly added some RNA and stem cell biology information that had been published in the last 7 years and some new techniques.

so if you have an old edition, the worst that will probably happen is that your're missing some newer information. buy what's affordable, and go to a library to study a newer edition to find out what you've been missing

It depends. Probably not much is going to change in calculus in 15 years. In natural language processing, hardly any non-trivial methods from 15 years ago are even taught to grad students these days.
