Yes a mathematican likely has a deeper understanding of whatever it is, but they don't have to make the whole system, just prove that a system can exist.
While you can do proves in programming, but your job will be not to prove things.
Your university assignments will reflect this. Beprepared to pull all nighters when programming something conceptually easy, doesn't work because the syntax means it's harder than it should be.
CS Isn't hard, but it will make you doubt yourself when you can't do something easy.
