Everyone working in academia are their out of irrational passion or failure to acclimate to the working world. Undergrad is a huge pile of shit. There’s a very small percentage of people who don’t just jump through hoops. Go around your campus and try having a substantive conversation with any person and if you have any depth of understanding of the topic you’ll find out very quickly that the average student does not. Exceptionally curious and motivated students are rare. Even rarer is the student motivated by nothing else aside from a desire to learn and apply. If you’re this person, working with just about everyone else is a fucking nightmare because they see you as the key to their future. Many people do not belong in college. It’s a strain on individual motivation and the economy.
Further, the only educations worth pursuing are those offered by private institutions, but even there nepotism and office politics reign supreme. The benefit here is that once you get away from a state-controlled institution, some actual learning can take place.
