Chinese universities continued to grow and focus on educating their own citizens while the universities of the West sold their diplomas to the highest bidders (i.e. internationals) while most of the citizens of those countries remained uneducated due to the huge costs of privatized university. Basically, capitalism fucked over the long-term health of Western countries in exchange for short-term profits while the government stood by and watched and the citizens took it in the ass quietly.
