My friend (cs grad student) said the book is too old and not worth getting into, although he is often times a brainlet and I don't know whether to trust him or not.

The 4th edition was released earlier this year however it seems to be out of stock on Amazon.

I haven't looked at the 3rd or 4th editions so it is possible that the modifications are not very much and it is outdated.

Just go on renowned AI/ML professor's webpages corresponding to the topic and learn from those.
