Row and column space are generally written as Row(A) and Col(A), respectively.
I guess you could write R(A) for the column space with the excuse that it's the *R*ange of the matrix transformation, but that's a little weird.

kinda hard to do when the book is required and picked out by the department. the funny part is the professor keeps correcting the slides thinking they mean C(A) whenever they say R(A) but if you look in the book, R(A) really does mean column space and C(A) doesn't exist in the book.

Sounds like your school was retarded on the day to pick out books. It happens. The calculus textbook my freshman year used ?x instead of dx. Never seen any other calculus book use the Greek symbol instead of plain old d. Probably was the idea of the textbook publisher so they could come out with a new edition using d instead. Likewise your Linear Algebra textbook might being using unconventional notation so they can justify a new edition after everyone complains.
