Introduction to Statistical Learning. It's available for free on the authors website.

Also take the Stanford Machine Learning class. Not the one on coursera since that is watered down, follow the syllabus on the stanford website.

Goodfellow et al - Deap Learning Book
A few Amazon guys created an interactive course. I guess there's material from every major dotcom company.

True. I'm in a reading group for ML papers and every few weeks half of everything we learned is already outdated. It's a fast-moving field.

Not really, core of statistical learning is the same just they keep coming out with better methods like probabilistic graphical models to reduce all the complexity problems to something trivial.
