Data, just not encoded in an easily comprehended way. Like everything else in biology it's a rats nest full of emergent behavior. That doesn't make it magic.
The totality of what you are is contained in your body. The only thing you leave behind is your ghost, the trail of impact you left on the world. Eventually your ghost too will fade.
But that's okay. Nothing lasts forever. Maybe some day humanity will figure out functional immortality. I hope they do, but I also hope they don't forget what eternity truly is. It's an important lesson.
