There isn't really a "wave" after you shake any more than there was before, because it's just a difference in the properties themselves of the medium. Light is not so much a distinct thing as it is a different set of values for the electric field at some given sets of points. Just like the mechanical wave example it can propagate through space, but it does so due to the properties of the medium rather than any object moving around.
