Will agriculture in Mars be centered around hydroponics, or do you think we will use actual Martian soil? I'm inclined to start a research project about plant resistance to perchlorates (prevalent there) but I don't want hydroporners dabbing on me at the end

Aquaponics mostly due to the density of food able to be produced with less materials
Martian regolith needs not only perchlorate removal, but it also needs soil producing organisms to break it down and add organic material to create soil and that takes quite a while and needs oxygen to happen
A full city might have biodomes with an ecosystem that has martian soil but not for mainstream agricultural use

Ecological succession and soil formation are pretty important to long term viability to a colony
The processes are rather interesting since you can see how it happens after glacial retreat or island formation, it gives a good road map on how to proceed, you might have a soil generation bin in a city to experiment and produce it

You might be able to find a perchlorate tolerant bacteria or fungi here on earth that is culturable on an anhydrite based regolith. Which means we would have to discover an anhydrite patch on Mars first, still an unknown, but may be present. If you can find a bug that can do this you can probably teraform some of Mars to allow for soil based agriculture.

You need something to reduce in the production of ATP, with sulfur reducing bacteria that could come from something like hydrous calcium sulfate. If there was a calcium carbonate you could start with a carbonate, and a carbonate reducing bacteria.

Perchlorates are water soluble. But hydroponics experiments would be interesting too. They allow for more energy and space efficient production for one thing. Idk if it will be main thing but mars for sure will have some hydroponics production and we will be in need of experienced farmers :)
