how quickly you grasp things is a good indicator. also whether you can understand and visualize abstract concepts. Can you produce a very clear colorful image in your head and rotate it real time freely without any trouble? Can you also make it have the viewing angle change as you rotate it? In my experience, no average person is capable of this.

Two indicators to me that someone is intelligent is general abstract reasoning and a strong writing or verbal skills. Most of the people who I have met in my life who I consider "intelligent" have these. In some cases they don't have the latter and are typically highly autistic but make up with it in raw intelligence/processing speed.
