Else it is a bit more like ethnogenesis via language: a group with common goals develops common "vocabulary" and a sense of identity at the same time. The bigger this group gets, the more people want to join.
With no shared interest in particular an individual wants to join the larger group. You know this as the feeling of wanting to be in the know, wanting to partake in private jokes etc.
