Infact, the reason lightning exists is that opposing charges in the earth and in the storm formations want to cancel, hence when the disequilibrium between them is high enough, you will see that lightning almost always strikes from both directions- lightning trails rise from the surface to meet incoming lightning from the clouds.
this has nothing to do with gravity though, electro magnetism is pure force, so in essence you can say there is no gravity, or that gravity and EM are the same thing.
