My work (R&D department of a medical manufacturer) encourages ongoing education so I could dedicate an hour or two per work day to working through them and if it's relevant to my job I could even ask the company to pay for the certificate at the end.
At the moment I'm looking at these courses since we could definitely do with using some more modern data analysis in our work.

cs50 is not a good start, wasted my time with it. No courses in my experience are that good and seem to breed intellectual cowardice and laziness where someone just wants to be spoon-fed. cs50 was far too much of an abstraction and talking about nothing for many minutes to try and make it seem fun, literally using scratch to teach adults.
Assuming you are comfortable with Precalculus, python is the perfect start to actually understand programming.

I've done automate the boring stuff with python before but am looking for more exposure to real-world research lab uses. Nobody in my team is capable of coding even 'hello world' except for the electrical engineer but his programming knowledge is specific to getting devices to run.

Online courses are for brainlets unable to find the information they need elsewhere.
Find out what you need to learn, and plan a timeline for it. Then, read the books and make sure you actually understand what you learned.
If something is not clear, find another source.
This is the best advice you will get if you are serious about it

Why would you plan your own syllabus when you can just find one that is already designed around your goals? Yeah if the course doesn't gel with you then skip it and do something else but that's no reason to go straight to a DIY solution where you would be destined to end up missing out on a lot of industry insight.
