Antidepressants

What does /sci/ think about antidepressants, particularly any medics who might be here?

I get that some people find them helpful and that's fine, they should be free to take them, if they wish.

But I strongly feel they should not be pushed on people. Doctors should make clear it's a choice. This isn't what I've been told though. I've had doctors tell me "some people NEED to be on these drugs". Nobody needs to do anything, except what they want to do themselves. Everything you do in life is a choice. When you abide by the law, you don't NEED to do that, you're making a choice - you don't want to go to prison.

I guarantee you that tons and tons of patients DO have the skills within them to overcome depression. By telling people that they "need" something, that's incorrect, and it's exploitative.

They are one method of overcoming depression, but not the only method.

Most importantly, an individual's freedom and autonomy is more important than anything else on this Earth.
