Why does this class filter so many people? I'm about to take an online-only version of it through my university and I've heard horror stories, but the practice I've done with Organic Chemistry as a Second Language has been easy and actually a bit fun

Well what's so hard about it? Everything I'm studying has been fun as fuck. Looking at the IUPAC nomenclature it spits out at me and picking it apart to realize what it's describing is extremely satisfying. The only thing I've had an issue with so far has been knowing where to start counting the carbons from.

I think it's because of the excessive amount of memorization required. The same reason medical school and law school filters many people, but chemistry has that added abstractness that medical and law school don't have.

From what I've seen others say, memorizing it is futile. There are thousands of reactions to memorize. Unless you mean the functional groups?

It kills many people because there are lots of untold rules and intuitive passages. Often there are many answers to one question. Often things contradict eachother in a particular situation.

Completely useless. You will die if you try to treat organic chemistry as a normal class. You need to develop the chemist's sight (see the nucleophile, the electrophile, the resonances, allylic / vynilic / benzylic positions, inductive and mesomery effects, how every single element and its basic groups usually behaves, etc...
It's a ton of work.

I’m in med school. Never used O chem or seen it used at all. Actually, I think one time mentioned a drug was formed from a SN2 reaction but that was it. Nothing was ever tested. Sad thing is on my STEP exam I had to name an organic molecule which I totally forgot how to do

I believe I do a good job at teaching it. I always help my students visualize how electrons are going to behave by using magnets on the whiteboard

It was hard taking a class in it because being asked to do a synthesis question in a timely manner requires you to memorize certain basic reactions to answer the question.

How the functional groups work or affect certain reactions (i.e. the "why") is the easier part to me. Trying to flex that you know how to synthesize a chemical quickly does require memorization.

How long does it take to get there? I plan to learn biochemistry eventually, but I want to get an intuitive understanding of general and organic chemistry for it.

Depends how clever you are, the effor you put in etc etc. You could do worse than working through the Clayden et al org chem textbook doing the problems etc if you have some background in chemistry. First edition you can find online for free.

Why would you want that for biochem? Biochem requires no understanding from a chemist point of view in all practicality. Really Ochem will appear on the MCAT and then you don't need to think about it again.

IUPAC is the easiest part of Ochem. The harder part is when you get to knowing Sn1 Sn2 E1 and E2 reactions, and then you are given a reaction and asked to give its primary product and list the type of reaction. Personally I found this to be interesting and so was able to do well in the course because my professor taught us how to think like a chemist (as another anon posted). If you don't do so, you just need to memorize a shit ton of reactions and you are fucked if they give you anything different to what you prepped for.
