Going to Mars is retarded and will ultimately be considered a waste of time and resources. Humanity would better spend their time in other space projects. Prove me wrong.

Exploration has never been a waste of time. Was coming to America a waste of time? leaving Africa at all? We have a serious overpopulation problem here that is only predicted to get worse. More land, more resources, solves tons of problems. On top of solving problems, the funding allows more research, technological progress, etc. Reusable rockets for example. What would be better to spend our money and time on, feeding Africans so they can breed out of control?

Only in Africa and middle east. Anywhere else there is an underpopulation problem looming, with fertility rates below replacement.

That said, space colonization is great for other reasons.

My ideal plan (and the only reason why Mars wouldn't be a waste of time) is if humans find the necessary materials to build a Torus. Otherwise it's such a waste. We have to remember our materials are realistically limited so we must use them carefully. Mars seems like a pleb tier temporary solution that will ultimately fail.

First you need a thriving mining colony somewhere in space where abundant resources are located, and only then you can begin constructing your precious Torus. You cannot colonize an empty vacuum and neither can you launch all that mass from Earth.

Mars is a great target for that first step.

Unless there is some life extension breakthrough, once Africa gets developed and has fertility rates in line with the rest of the world, population is going to crater.

Do you think resources will be plentiful on a Torus? Do you think everything can just be recycled with 100% efficiency no problem? How long do you think a Torus would just stay in its orbit, despite solar radiation and collisions or fly-bys with space debris/dust, along with ships docking with it? How many people do you plan on housing? Do you seriously think a Torus could become compleatly self-sufficient?

I'm thinking of a Noah's Ark type of thing where we put the best of humanity on board (rather than animals), thenm along with suffient fuel, food, etc., we go to one of the nearest Earth-like planets: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_potentially_habitable_exoplanets

I don't mean this project to solve overpopulation nor to be the ultimate savior for humanity. More like an idea to preserve mankind if (when?) we destroy Earth. The spefics of which planet to choose are of course still subject of discussion.

I can't because you are right. Venus would be a better first planet project. It is way closer, it is way easier, it's atmosphere would allow a common air balloon platform to stay afloat forever and protected from sun's radiation, the average temp of 60ºC at 1-atmosphere pressure.

IMO I think a big thing driving us toward mars colonization, is long-term costs. And also the prospect of mining and industry later on. Unlike the moon, mars may have water underground, which could be used instead of it being shipped there all the time(thus saving money). The soil may or maynot be able to support plant growth(saving money on shipping food to mars).

Entering and exiting planetary atmospheres is too expensive, I think we wont see someone on Mars any time soon. Building on the moon or in its orbit will be much easier, faster, and less expensive, and get us closer logistically to asteroid mining which could actually be made profitable and prpductive. Any colonization of Mars will be so ungodly expensive that you cannot overlook the opportunity cost.

Nah, Mars is actually in the sweet spot where it has atmosphere thick enough to use for aerobraking but also gravity low enough for single-stage-to-orbit (or even single-stage-to-Earth-surface) to be viable.

I guess you aren't? It worked quite well after they fixed the concrete CO2 absorption issue, and then failed for non-technical reasons. Also, Chances are another effort like that would be successful.
