Gas Planets

Gas planets are kinda cool, and they make me curious. Would a gas planet close in size to earth be possible? Or would the gravity not be strong enough to hold the gas in, and just make an atmosphere about as big as ours? What if you magically scaled down a gas planet so that it keeps its proportions and composition at a smaller size? Would anything else change? What happens if you scale it up? How far do you have to go before its mass and gravity makes it become a star? Could you potentially make a habitat in a gas planet? Why do they have rings more often than rocky planets? Could you live on the rings?

I do not know much about gas planets, but I sure do want to, even if its in regards to things that can't scientifically work.
